Hi all! Obviously I am terrible at keeping up with the whole blogging thing. I’ll try to do better in 2018, but, you know, no promises.
For my second and final post of 2017, I’ve compiled a list of upcoming writing/editing conferences and literary festivals to watch out for next year. The one event I managed to attend last year was pretty helpful. It forced me out of the house to meet writers irl, and it gave me perspective and insight into the writing process from the other side of the page.
I’m based in Oklahoma, so my focus is going to be on things within a day’s drive of my house (Texas, Arkansas, Missouri), but I’ve got several links to good lists of nationwide and international events as well. Here are those first:
And the regional ones I’ll be keeping an eye on:
San Antonio Book Festival, April 7
Unbound Book Festival, Columbia, MO, April 20
ACES Conference, Chicago, April 26–28 (A bit outside my range, but this is a big editing conference, so it gets a spot.)
Arkansas Literary Festival, Little Rock, April 26–29
Dallas Book Festival, April 29
Boldface, Houston, May
Oklahoma Writers’ Federation Conference, Oklahoma City, May 4–5
Books in Bloom Literary Festival, Eureka Springs, AR, May 20
Writers’ League of Texas Agents & Editors Conference, Austin, TX, June 19 to July 1
The Mayborn, University of North Texas, July 20–22
Penned Con, St. Louis, September 20–22
Fort Worth BookFest, TBA
ShowMe Writers Masterclass, Missouri, TBA
Southern Literary Festival, Fort Smith, AR
My goal is to do at least one of these every year. I highly recommend getting out there and meeting with real-life writers, editors, agents, and publishing professionals. I'm an introvert and I know it can suck to force yourself out of your comfort box and into a crowd, but the nice thing is that you can interact with other people as much or as little as you want. You'll benefit from being there no matter what.
Happy New Year!
